New online course: Using science, knowledge and tools to operationalise the BBNJ Agreement

A new online course on the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement has been launched by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 – 2030) (‘Ocean Decade’) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO‘s OceanTeacher Global Academy.

Titled “Using Science, Knowledge and Tools to Operationalise the BBNJ Agreement,” the course explores how to use ocean science and knowledge to implement the BBNJ Agreement, and provides access to the existing ocean science and data platforms to enable effective operationalisation.

About the course

Featuring the contributions of over 80 world-leading ocean experts, the course includes three modules that cover:

  • Background and key concepts underlying the BBNJ Agreement
  • The Agreement’s four main pillars: Marine genetic resources; Area-Based Management Tools, including Marine Protected Areas; Environmental Impact Assessments; and Capacity-building and the Transfer of Marine Technology
  • The Agreement’s main implementation mechanisms

The course is open to all, with a particular focus on early- and mid-career professionals working in ocean-related institutions, services, and research centres.
